Who Shall I Be – A Celebrity or Me?

Celebrities are everywhere today.

Open the Internet and the first thing you see on Yahoo are the celebrity stories of the day. Pick up a magazine or newspaper or read them online and you get a good dose of celebrities dressed up or down. Then there are the TV female newsreaders and weather reporters looking glamorous.

Are celebrities good dressing role models? Being a celebrity is a part of being an actress or TV presenter or like Kim Kardishian, it is a multi-million dollar business. Do you want to dress like Kim Kardishian, Cate Blanchett, Paris Hilton, Judi Dench or would you rather be yourself?

Here are my views on celebrities as dressing role models for professional and business women over 40.

Fashion Parade Clothing

Be a celebrity star or a TV personality and you are given clothes to wear for special occasions. The bigger the star, the more choice they have. Even weeknight TV presenters are offered outfits for the week and they choose what they will wear each night. After one wear, celebrities give them back. Price is not a consideration and neither is the upkeep of this massive wardrobe. Wouldn’t that be delightful! On the down side you may have to wear clothes that are not who you really are or put on double the shapewear to fit into them.

Celebrities are unpaid models on a public fashion parade for TV, magazines and the Internet. They are dressed for show not for everyday life and work.

Dressed by Stylists

Personal stylists are an essential part of the celebrity world. It is their job to put the whole look together so that the clothes, colours and accessories create a modern coordinated look. Mismatching is for those who cannot afford a personal stylist or who ignore their advice. It is the celebrity’s job to wear the look confidently whether it is their style or not.

You can hire a stylist. Image Consultants or shopping centre Stylists can take you shopping to create your look. You must feel comfortable that the person you choose spends some time finding out who you really are. You want to be the best you shining confidently not a Kim or Cate or other celebrity clone.

When stars and celebrities are out and about dressed casually or going to private functions, they are often as confused about how to dress as most other women are. It is important to learn how to be true to yourself and dress for your individual style every time you step out your front door. You must practise that skill over time so that your choices become easy and automatic. One-off or occasional stylist sessions fill an urgent need rather than teaching you a life skill.

Playing a Part

Lots of women dress to represent people’s perceptions of their job and celebrities are no different. Celebrities dress to promote their movies, their TV shows or their celebrity brand. It is about visibility and getting a flattering picture on the cover or a fashion article in the print media to balance all the ‘maybe true’ gossip articles. Stars want to impress those who may employ then and companies who will pay them to promote their products as well as the general public.

Then there are celebrities like the Kardishians who wear their own products for self-promotion and sales.

What You Can Adapt from Celebrities

Celebrities can be great ‘hair role models’ whether that is a cut or a colour or highlighting your natural grey colour. Currently many women over 40 are wanting a ‘Judi Dench’ modern hairstyle.

When it comes to modelling the dressing style of celebrities, be fussy. Copying their style can lead to wearing short-lived and inappropriate fad clothing. Your best clothing role models are probably part of your local work and life circle. Model them or seek help from an Image Consultant. Remember, the real celebrity may be nothing like their public dressing personality.
